children are a gift

Wednesday afternoons Jude and I get to hang out together while Ethan has Awanas. It's fun to have this time with Jude. He becomes quite chatty and I think he enjoys the one-on-one attention. But during this time I also have to get dinner ready, so Jude has to figure out what to do on his own. He's usually pretty laid back and is good about playing on his own (I guess it's a second born thing), so I brought out the play dough for him to play with. He sat quite contentedly and quietly (except for the occasional dialogue he was having with his pretend characters he made out of play dough) the whole time I was getting dinner ready. I stopped at one point just to watch him play and just had one of those mommy moments where you want to go over and squeeze your kid because they are just so darn cute.

I truly am thankful for my boys (and this little baby girl growing in my belly) and that God chose me to be their mommy. It is a gift and blessing to be a mom and so often a big part of my sanctification. It is a high calling that requires constant running to God for wisdom and strength. I just pray that above all God would be glorified through my efforts at being a mom to my children.

"Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward."

have we got a deal for you

So I was thinking today about how I assumed when we moved here that we would have floods of visitors. I mean, come on, who could pass up the opportunity to come to Hawaii and have your housing and most meals paid for? All you have to pay for is airfare. Yes, I realize the airfare is a bit pricey depending on when you come but you can't find a better deal out there then what we can offer. So you want to know how many guests we've had since we've been here (remember we're going on 3 1/2 years)? Not including family (and not all family has been out here either)...1. Yes, that is one visitor. We've had two other friends come out but it was to speak/preach in our church...so we had to pay them to come see us...I'm just kidding...not on the paying them but that we have to pay our friends to come see us. And then we had a couple of friends that we saw while they were passing through on vacation here in Hawaii.

So obviously the issue here is that I haven't posted enough pictures about how beautiful and amazingly gorgeous this place is...it's not like any place you've been to. To solve this problem I thought I would post some pictures to entice some of our friends out there, that read my blog, to take us up on this amazing deal (and just so you know fall and spring have great deals on flights).

You get the mountains and the beach...
greenery and flowers year round...
sunsets like this almost daily...
hiking and swimming and kayaking...

beach after beach after beach...and warm sunshine almost everyday...

long leisurely walks on the beach...
fresh fruit picked straight from the trees that grow in plenty...
sweet smelling flowers.

Yes, you get all of this and MORE. We will be your tour guides (we know the great places that regular tourists don't know about) so you will save money by not having to rent a car. And you get to hang out with our cute kids too.

You can't even put a price on that. So you better hurry before we fill our house up with kids...then there won't be any room for guests, unless you don't mind sleeping in a tent in the backyard.

So what can I say, it gets a bit lonely out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and we really miss our friends and family...don't worry I haven't gone crazy...it's just the pregnancy hormones talking.

costume preview

Jude Crockett (a.k.a. Davy Crockett) or as Jude calls himself baby Crockett
Cowboy Ethan
We had a town festival tonight to try out the newly made costumes and brush up on our trick-or-treating skills. There was candy, pumpkin decorating, face painting, radio-controlled car racing and lots of tasty food. So I think we're warmed up for next Friday.

graduation day

Yesterday was Ethan's last day of swimming/graduation. He passed level 2, and starting in the spring can start level 3. Ethan got his swimming basics from Aunty Patty, which he learned very quickly and well...it was a good foundation. But due to the expense of such private lessons we decided to check out the local district park swimming lessons (free) to see how they were. Well let's just say Ethan didn't learn much more and it wasn't great technique, but he didn't care...he was just glad to be able to splash around and have fun twice a week in a pool.

I think what made it all worth it was the diving for coins they did on their graduation day. Have you ever fed Koi fish before? That's what it kind of resembled. Ethan came up with $1.20 in change...so technically they paid us for swim lessons.

pumpkin patch

Today we met up with our friends at Aloun Farms to pick out pumpkins from their pumpkin patch. I had always heard about this place but was also told that it was very dry, dusty and HOT...wear play clothes. I just have to keep reminding myself that the holidays here are not like the holidays on the mainland. So all of those holidays where you picture sweaters, coats, hot chocolate, snow, brisk breezes, hot apple cider and fall foliage....are then replaced with sweat (lots of sweat), hot sun, short sleeve shirts, sunscreen and ice cold water. But the boys had a blast and Ethan told me we should go back next week. What do they know? To them this is normal for pumpkin picking.

They even had a hay ride (not so fun with shorts on...kind of itchy...but to a boy, how could it get any better...tractors, dirt and machines). Then they each were able to pick out one pumpkin each to carve in about a week because any sooner and we'll have a carved pumpkin of mush.

ali'i tours

Today Jason took a day off during the schools fall break and we decided to go have some island fun. Friends have told us how great the Macadamia Nut Farm is, especially if you take the Ali'i Tour. So we decided to check it out. We learned about different plants and flowers and how they were used for food, clothing and shelter. And we learned a little bit about the Polynesian culture...how they fished, made fire, made fish ponds, fire danced, called each other using conch shells. The boys had a blast.

This is the little tour bus we rode around the farm in. I'm amazed that it didn't fall apart when we went over bumps. This was the "chief" who showed us his fire dance, fire starting, conch calling, and coconut shelling skills. Very impressive. Here's Jude drinking the coconut milk from a freshly cut coconut. He will try anything. He also ate the star fruit (seeds and all) they were picking off the trees and handing to us.And then we finished off our tour with a boat ride around a 800 year old fish pond created by the Hawaiians...and the beautiful Kualoa mountains in the background. Apparently the big draw to these gardens and farm are the many movies/TV shows filmed on this location (LOST; 50 First Dates; Gilligan's Island; You, Me and Dupree; Fantasy Island; Jurassic Park) which they pointed out to us as we sailed around the pond.

life with the Wood family

Here's the latest from our household:

Haircuts for the boys. These are before pictures (after pictures are the following pictures).

Ethan got his first library card. Apparently when they are old enough to sign their name they can get a card. As you can see he is very excited about it.

And last is a video of Jude saying "Baklava"...a pastry that I was craving (a friend of mine's Greek family used to make this tasty dessert and thankfully Agnes Portuguese Bake Shop makes it here in Hawaii) and had to stop to get one. Jude and I were out spending some quality time together and enjoyed our pastry together. He was so cute saying the word that I had to video tape it.

more bears

Well this is the season for babies. I made two more of my Aloha Bears for two friends that are having babies within the next couple of months...one girl and one boy. A friend of mine is going to see if she can get some of my bears in a little boutique here. It would be kind of nice to have someone else sell them for me. It sounds like I could make a few and they would sell them in their store. Then when they run out, they'll ask me to make a few more. So we'll see.

project complete

Well I finished this project I bought fabric for almost exactly a year ago. I think it's part of this nesting thing....I want to complete projects, organize, throw out things we don't use, clean, etc. So here's the completed product. I thought I would make two, one for each of the boys, but after making one I think I'm done...they can share.

my thumb is a changin' colors

Here is an update on our little lanai garden. Amazingly things are still alive and actually producing vegetables and herbs.
This is our grape tomato plant which had our first fruits. We have picked 3 tomatoes so far (which Jude has quickly gobbled down...he is my tomato eater). This is our first eggplant which still needs to grow and ripen a little longer...but isn't it beautiful. I can't wait to roast it on the grill and eat it.This is our mint plant which is growing like crazy. I have enjoyed drinking mint water since I have to drink so much water...being pregnant and all. It is really refreshing.Next is our basil plant which looks puny now but I just cut it back to make some fresh basil pesto. Thanks to my friend Jocelyn on how to make it and freeze it...can't wait to use that in my next recipe...yum!Ethan tries to plant every seed he comes across, either while outside or eating. So one night we were eating watermelon and he decided he would plant the seed to see if it grows. He always follows that with "does this plant grow in Hawaii mom?". This particular species does...a Thai watermelon. So we'll see. I think we may have to plant this one in the ground because I'm pretty sure these plants need LOTS of space...more than a little container. And last is our yellow squash which produces these beautiful flowers. And that's about it. I've heard from friends who try to grow yellow squash that they don't actually get any squash either. So I'm not sure if the bees aren't doing their job or maybe these plants don't enjoy the warm Hawaiian weather. So we'll wait a few more weeks and see what happens. If not I may just replace it with zucchini, which is what I really wanted all along. I just couldn't find a starter plant anywhere. I guess everyone else wants zucchini as well.

My latest project for my new little nephew-to-be. We can't wait to meet the little guy.

side note on math facts

To go back to my post titled "my little student", I forgot to mention that Ethan only knows his +1, +0 and doubles facts for addition. We are now working on the +2 facts. So if he knew all of the addition facts, I might think he is a prodigy as well. But I think he is fairly normal in his math skills for his age. Anyway just felt like I needed to say that with the responses I got from a few readers.
